Salamu Alaykum, Is it permissible to eat meat in the US since we consider the people living here as people of the book ? If not, which countries (in Europe and America) would you consider its population as people of the book ?
When we consider the meat of the people of book to be Halal, it requires that they also slaughter the cattle in accordance with the laws of their divine scripture. If the people of do not follow the laws of their scripture then their meat will also be considered Haram just as if a Muslim did not follow the rules of Islam at the time of slaughtering the animal then the meat will be considered Haram.
If you are going to buy meat from a follower of a divine scripture (Jew or Christian) who can assure you 100% that the animal was slaughtered in accordance with the laws of their scripture then the meat would be considered Halal. Otherwise, it would be considered Haram.
Now, the reality about the meat available in most supermarkets and grocery stores all over America (and perhaps other European countries) is not slaughtered in accordance with the laws of any scripture. Therefore, the meat generally sold in grocery stores and supermarket is not considered Halal unless we can be assured (authentically) otherwise.
And Allah knows best.
