Assalamu Alaikum respected Mufti. My question is about women praying at the masjid vs praying at home. It has been my understanding that the best place for a woman to pray is in her home. It's what I have always been told. Recently I listened to a lecture on YouTube from an American scholar who from what I understood said that women should pray at the masjid and the hadith that is quoted about praying at home was particularly for one woman who was having marriage difficulties (the link to this video: http://youtu.be/z9nuAsXFhmw at about 37.35 minutes into video). I am wondering if this is correct information or not. Thank you. JazakAllah Khair

Dear sister in Islam

Assalam u Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah,

Although it is permissible for a woman to pray at the Masjid without any doubt and no one holds the authority to prevent women from praying at the Masjid but it is also a fact that it is better and more rewardable for a woman to pray at home or private place. This fact has been established through numerous authentic Prophetic traditions.

It is not correct to believe that the Prophetic traditions instructing women to pray at home only apply to those women who are having marriage difficulties. Such instructions apply to all believing women.

And Allah knows best.
