Is it true that a muslim who becomes an apostate should be killed even if he or she does not wage war on islam? Does the ruling apply only if a person lives in an islamic country?
If someone turns away from Islam then there are several ways of dealing with that person. First of all it is treated as treason and it is considered as one of the most serious crimes in Islam. The first step to dealing with such a situation is to address the issues and concerns of that person that led them to turn away from Islam. If all efforts to resolve the concerns or issues fail then the person may be asked to leave the Muslim country. These rules do not apply to those who live in non-Muslim countries.
And Allah knows best.
