The prohibition of following the ways of non-Muslims (Kuffar) only applies to their practices that are considered specifically part of the teachings of another religion. If something is done as a custom of culture, region or lifestyle that is not prohibited in Islam then it would not fall under the prohibition of following the ways of non-Muslims (Kuffar). For example, celebrating Christmas will not be allowed because it is a religious celebration of Christians but celebrating independence day or memorial day etc... will not be prohibited because these days are not celebrated as part of a religious tradition. Likewise, birthday is not a celebration that is observed as a religious custom. Rather it is observed as a casual event on someone's birthday.

And Allah knows best.
